As the wrestling season moves forward, the Halstead wrestling program keeps demonstrating a tradition of excellence by combining hard work, passion, and a dedication to developing athletes who succeed both on the mat and in other aspects of life. With a strong lineup of 16 boys and girls this year, featuring an exceptional group of seniors and talented underclassmen, the program is aiming for high standards of future success.
A Legacy of Excellence
The Halstead wrestling program has built a reputation for developing elite athletes, and this year continues that tradition. Senior Clayton Considine has secured his spot in Halstead's history by holding the all-time record for wins. His leadership and unwavering dedication have made him a prominent figure in the program. Clayton's consistent performance and commitment not only make him a role model for his teammates but also a strong competitor at the state level.
"Clayton's leadership on and off the mat has been crucial for us," says head Coach Burke, "He brings a level of intensity and focus that motivates the entire team."
Fellow senior Connor Herman is also making waves this season, with a 25-4 record and a ranking of #5 in the 4A division. Connor's strength, technique, and mental toughness make him a dangerous competitor, and his drive for success is contagious among the team.
Juniors like Ava Armstrong and sophomore Parker Metoyer are also stepping up as leaders, proving that talent and leadership can emerge at any grade level. Ava, with her unwavering work ethic, is setting the tone for younger athletes, while Parker continues to develop into a key wrestler for the team. Alexis Westfall, senior, is another example of a hard worker who shows up every day and never complains.
Kahlyn Davis has quickly become one of the most recognizable names in 4A girls wrestling. With an impressive 25-4 record and currently ranked #3 in the state, Davis is proving herself as a force to be reckoned with in the sport.
Callyn Divine had an impressive freshman wrestling season last year, securing a second-place finish at state with only one loss. Unfortunately, she's been sidelined this year due to an injury, but her presence is still felt within the team. Even though she's unable to compete, Callyn plays an important role by instructing her teammates and cheering them on. We’re all looking forward to having her back next season, as she continues to be a major part of the team's success.
A Growing Team with a Winning Mentality
One of the most exciting aspects of this year’s team is its blend of experienced athletes and fresh talent. The addition of three athletes from Sedgwick, thanks to the team’s co-op partnership, has added valuable depth. The bond between the athletes from both schools has been a testament to the strength of the team’s chemistry, where everyone’s success is celebrated.
Wrestling: More Than Just a Sport
One of the most rewarding aspects of the Halstead wrestling program is the way the sport benefits athletes in all aspects of life—especially in other sports. Wrestling builds essential skills that are transferable to nearly every athletic endeavor. The intense physical conditioning required for wrestling improves strength, endurance, and agility, which directly benefits athletes in sports like football, basketball, and track. Additionally, the emphasis on balance and body control enhances coordination and reaction time, making wrestlers better all-around athletes.
With state competitions on the horizon, the Halstead wrestling team is poised for continued success. The combination of a strong senior leadership group, up-and-coming stars, and a supportive team culture makes them a force to be reckoned with in the coming months.
The future of Halstead wrestling is bright, and the team’s continued commitment to excellence, both on the mat and as student-athletes, will surely keep them competing at the highest level for years to come.
